What a juicy topic! In a recent post about the 10 mistakes bloggers make, I said that one thing you need to do is get your blog a real name, and point it to your blog. That way, people can find your blog with a normal address, such as www.kirstenfarris.com vs. a long URL like
http://bulldogmarketing.typepad.com All this seems to make sense. but HOW should you do it?
The first thing you need to do is get your blog a URL or Domain Name. My favorite place to get domain names is with Go Daddy since they are about the cheapest, and pretty easy to use with typepad. You just go to Go Daddy and you can enter your choices for domain names. Once you find one that you like, grab it quick and register it.
Once you have your name there are two ways to point it to your blog, Forwarding or Domain Mapping.
Did you know that every post you create for your blog has it's own unique web address? That is what a Permalink is and they are at the bottom of all blog posts. Go ahead, click on the permalink below, and see what comes up in your browser, and then come back here for more.
OK, did you see that the address for this post contains kirstenfarris.com in it? If I just forwarded my domain name to my blog, the permalink would look like http://bulldogmarketing.typepad.com and will not contain my snappy new domain name. It will be much easier for people to find you if you only have one domain name attached to your blog.
Domain Mapping actually integrates your new name into all of your blog posts, and from a branding standpoint will give you a bit more mileage when people are searching for you, and it is pretty easy to do with Typepad. If you are serious about your blog make a commitment to it, and go to Go Daddy now! In my next post, I will show you how to map it with TypePad.
