Are you having a productive day? I hope so. Normally when I post on my blog, I really try and focus on ya'll out there that read my stuff. I'm sorry, but today, it's all about ME! Here is how my morning went:
I got up early, grabbed my cold TAB (Yes, they still make TAB), sat down at my computer and started doing the daily browse. Stopped by my friends Denise & Patsi and saw this post about boosting your blog rankings.
Interesting stuff, and something a lot of you have been asking about, and so I figure you would want to know about it, so I dig a little deeper. Turns out that PageRank is actually named after Larry Page, and not physical web pages. Hmmm...Read a bit more, and find out PageRank is really about sites that link to your site which is called Backlinking. Where it gets even more interesting, is that some links don't count toward your PageRank score, which by the way is a number that they say is between 0-10. The links that don't count are links that are called No Follow links, and those are links that may come from message board posts, and even some blogs, since people could just do mass postings and link to their site, and artifically inflate their ranking. If you have real sites linking to your site, you would get credit for that link, and if you have a real well known site linking to your site, then you would get extra credit for that one. Get the picture? Hopefully that was good information for you, but remember, this is about me!
So I find out how I can actually determine my page ranking, and see the number of links that I have. That seems like something I should know, kind of like keeping track of your Credit Score. Off I go and do a search on how to get my page rank. Seems there is an outfit called Whats My Page Rank and you can just put in your website and it will give you your page ranking. So I did it. And guess what? I have a page rank of -1! Yes, that is what it said. I thought that 0 was the lowest score, but maybe that was for Web 1.0 and now that it is called Web 2.0 I can reach a spot that is lower than zero. So hey, while your down, keep digging, right? I read that I can go to Yahoo.com and type in links://kirstenfarris.com and see how many links I have. Wow!! I have 32, but they are the kind that don't count I guess. Now I am on a mission. I go onto Google and type in links://kirstenfarris.com and see that I actually have 8 links to my site, but guess what? They are from my friend Mark Ryan. I did an interveiw for his podcast, and it was about sales. Totally Legit. The problem is, the site name linked to mine contains a few words from a 'bad neighborhood' (an actual google term). That might explain why I got the -1.
But here is the kicker...A lot of people find me through Mark. You know what? I don't care what my page ranking is, I am greatful that people read my blog.
This will be my last post on Search Engine Optimization. There are far too many experts out there, and I think I found someone that actually speaks english. If you want to know anything, visit
The Marketing Doctor. There, I linked to him. I wonder if my link will count?
Thanks for Listening!
